Sustainable shopping is crucial for the well-being of our planet and communities, particularly in cities
like Leeds, where the environmental footprint is alarmingly high. Climate Action Leeds reports that each
resident annually produces 9.6 tonnes of carbon, exceeding the safe boundary by six times. Additionally,
Leeds' consumption in 2018 contributed to over 21,000 child labourers in global supply chains,
highlighting the ethical ramifications of unsustainable consumption patterns. Moreover, the average
person in Leeds is linked to the use of over 13.2 tonnes of materials such as fossil fuels, wood, and
metals, surpassing safe planetary boundaries nearly twice.
These statistics underscore the urgent need
for sustainable shopping practices to ease environmental degradation and social injustices. By
adopting sustainable shopping habits, you can actively reduce your carbon footprint, minimize
waste, and promote fair labour practices. In doing so, Leeds can move towards a more sustainable future.
